An aside from our history

While reading the book " Witness to Surrender" by Brig. Siddiq Salik, i came across this passage:

“Soon other groups, including jewelers, tannery workers, journalists, family planning working and tea-garden employees, were jumping onto the bandwagon of agitators. Their demands were formulated into points which numbered from three to fifteen. The crowing moment came on 4 September, 1970, when beggars formed their East Pakistan Beggars’ Association and held a public meeting at the famous Paltan Maidan to press for the acceptance of their five-point charter of demands”

The Official Version:

The Tragedy of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) is rarely discussed in Pakistan today. This is what we are told today: in 1971, India incited first covertly and then overtly some separatist elements in East Pakistan. When Pakistan Army (reluctantly!) stepped in to restore “law and order”, India armed the separatist militia (Mukti Bahni “Liberation Army”). Indian Army also took in the action. We surrendered and 90,000 of Pakistani citizens were made POWs.

The Unofficial Version:
